i do not have many teachers that i admire.

TITS McGee, I think the best thing you can do to solve the world's problems is get to know yourself. Figure out who you really are and become that person. Being a JW retards the process of understanding yourself, because you weren't allowed to have a self. We were all trying to fit into a mold... Once you know your best and worst qualities, you can figure out what kinds of circumstances fit you the best, and where you can make the good qualities count and turn the bad ones into something useful.

Also, don't worry too much. Keep an open mind. Keep your options open. If you're the right guy, with all the right qualities to think about a certain issue, you'll be drawn to it naturally, whether it's a field of study, or even a person.

The Watchtower is absolutely anti-aid, anti-charity. Their message is to save all your resources so that you can keep feeding the giant WT corporation. Don't give anything to those satanic charities out there, and God forbid anyone volunteer their time in any humanitarian organizations.

Haha. I remember we used to make fun/get annoyed at my dad because he would randomly highlight parts of the article, usually just a word here and there. I was pioneering at the time and writing all the scriptures in the margins from on top of my self-righteous pedastal. Now I get it :)

i haven't followed the generation change in the doctrine that closely, just read a few snippets of the overlapping generations doctrine.

i find this hard to believe even for the pathological liars the governing body.. has anyone seen the 4/15/2010 watchtower with their own eyes?.

can anyone validate that the wtbts really is saying this overlapping generation idea the way it is being quoted on the internet in a few places?

It's hard losing old friends when you are young. I have very little to no contact with most of my childhood best friends. But I've found that post-JW friendships can be even more meaningful because they are based on a lot more than shared false beliefs. You have a great family. I'm happy you are all on the same page now! That should help.

I agree with L4P - it's usually better to say as little as possible to JDubs, to avoid wreaking havoc. Try to lay low for a little while, but enjoy you're life! Make new friends, enjoy spending time with your girlfriend, get involved in all kinds of activities. Now that you're out, you can really get to know who you are and develop your talents and figure out what makes you happy and how you can use your personality traits to help others. The best is yet to come! You're young enough that in a couple of years, you might have a hard time even remembering what it was like to be a witness. I feel like that sometimes and I've only been out for about 3 years.

first new topic for me.. i have observed this site for about 4 years.

haven't been to a meeting since oct 2005. definitely feel jws are a high control group that mirrors many of the definitions of a cult.. i was raised as a witness since age 5, left at age 38, now 43. happily married to a wonderful woman for 24 years, except for 1 year of separation when i was failing miserable in a search for my true self - hard to do when you were completely sucked into this religion.

yes, i was a true believer pretty much up into my late 30s.

I'm a 25-year-old female, but there were many parts of your story that I could relate to. I was also married at 19 and had a similar "awakening" experience (due to attention from a man in his 30s who offered me a completely new perspective on life) that made me realize I didn't really have any life experience and made me want to get to know myself better. That experience led me to where I am today - I feel like I know who I am, what my assets are, how I can contribute to my environment, how to be a good friend, how to make thoughtful, honest decisions - things I didn't have a grasp on as a witness. Of course, there were a lot of negative consequences as well (I'm no longer with my husband, though that's turned out for the best for both of us).

I've heard several ex-witnesses say that we intuitively know when we are things just aren't quite right, and sometimes events just fall into place to get us out of those circumstances (maybe we are subconsciously attracted to whatever will get us out). For me, it almost felt like a natural process leaving the organization. I was just kind of along for the ride. Anyway, I'm happy that things turned out well for you, and especially that you were able to keep your family in tact.

What if.... the JW's didn't have to turn in service reports?

when i was a youngin at bethel in the 70's, a bethel elder mentioned to our crew that they were discussing the possibility of ending service reports.

he wanted to know our thoughts and how could the elders and the wts monitor the preaching work if they changed the service reporting?

would the work go down without the monitoring?.

Most people don't like going door to door. I think without reports, people would stop door to door work and make an effort to talk to friends, neighbors, workmates, etc. On the other hand, the organization is based on rules and witnesses are used to being spoon-fed instructions on how to behave in all matters. So without rules and regulations, some may not even know where to begin if the only requirement was to do something from the heart. In which case, the "preaching work" in the form of a campaign would just stop.
